Public Ecology is founded by Miko Takama, Japanese knitter living in Helsinki, Finland.
My sustainable Japandi knitwear pieces are entirely hand-knitted and made-to-order, only using natural materials. I wish to bring back the appreciation for precious art of handmade fashion with luxurious feels of the high quality natural materials and minimalistic patterns while promoting ethical and environmental responsibility.
As a one-person operation, the journey from concept and design to the creation of each piece is an exquisitely slow and meticulous process. Rather than viewing this as a drawback, I embrace it as a defining element of my brand. While my collection evolves gradually and the made-to-order model naturally extends production time, I believe this deliberate approach is the most elegant and sustainable way to cultivate a knitwear brand—one that wholeheartedly celebrates the art of slow fashion.

Japandi
“Japandi,” a portmanteau of “Japanese” and “Scandi”, and it is two distinct minimalist styles that are married harmoniously. The innate love of nature in Nordic countries and Japan makes it possible for the two cultures to easily blend with one another. It’s a merging of two historic “less-is-more” cultures and a natural hybrid between two cultures that privilege minimalism and tranquility. Japandi’s characteristics in my mind are: craftsmanship, texture, balance, and serenity, and make me think of natural woods, earthy materials, neutral colour palettes. The philosophy and the aesthetics of Japandi is my endless source of inspiration.

Made-to-Order
Having worked with various fashion brands, including those dedicated to sustainability, I always knew that if I were to create my own brand, it would embrace the made-to-order model—a philosophy where each piece is lovingly crafted only after a customer places an order.
In an age where convenience often means instant gratification, the made-to-order approach requires a shift in perspective for some. However, my vision extends beyond merely producing knitwear; I aim to champion the art of conscious, slow fashion by encouraging the purchase of fewer, exquisitely crafted pieces designed to endure.
This approach not only eliminates waste and surplus inventory but also offers something truly special—a bespoke experience that fast fashion simply cannot replicate. The process of having a garment made exclusively for you carries a sense of intimacy and emotional value. It is my hope that this personal connection inspires customers to cherish and appreciate my knitwear, allowing them to enjoy each piece for years to come.

Materials
Woven by nature and designed to endure, wool epitomises sustainable luxury. These exquisite fibers are naturally biodegradable, endlessly renewable, and require minimal processing, leaving a gentler footprint on the planet. Unlike synthetic alternatives, they breathe, insulate, and age gracefully—ensuring both elegance and environmental harmony in every thread.
I endeavour to incorporate certified wool wherever possible, ensuring each piece upholds the high standards of sustainability.
Currently, 28% of my pieces are crafted using yarns certified by the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) and STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®.
